Etihad Airways sends the UAE flag on an incredible journey

To mark the UAE flag day, Etihad Airways, the UAE national carrier, released a video featuring a group of 4 children, sending their wishes and the nation’s flag all the way into space.

In collaboration with Send Into Space, a high-altitude balloon operator, the UAE flag has reached the edge of space at an altitude of 32,182 meters (105583 feet) above the Earth. The flag travelled at a speed of 5.5 meters per second and the flight duration was 2 hours 52 minutes.

Interesting facts about the UAE flag journey into space:

  • The UAE flag reached a peak altitude of 32,182 meters (105583 feet) above the Earth
  • The gateway to near-space is the ‘Armstrong Limit’ which is 19.2km, at this height the pressure is so low that you would need a pressurised space suit to survive as your blood would boil in your body due to the low pressure – the flag was approaching twice this height.
  • The flag experienced pressures of almost 0% of that at sea level and temperature got down to minus 62 degrees Celsius at its lowest point.
  • Minimum pressure registered at 3.2kpa (0.032 bar)
  • In the early stages of the flags descent before there was no atmosphere to act against the parachute the flag was falling at around 250mph, as the assembly continued its descent this slowed to a nice gentle walking pace.
  • Average ascent rate was 5.5 m/s
  • Flight duration 2 hours 52 minutes
  • Flightpath distance (as crow flies) 95 miles
