Strengthening Statistical Systems in Conflict-Affected Arab Countries
In a move aimed at strengthening the continuity of official data production in fragile environments, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) has called for greater support for national statistical systems in Arab countries affected by conflict. ESCWA stressed that official statistics are a cornerstone of evidence-based policymaking and essential to supporting recovery efforts and sustainable development.
The call came during an expert meeting held in Amman, Jordan, with the participation of experts and representatives from statistical institutions, as well as regional and international organizations. The meeting focused on ways to strengthen the resilience of statistical systems, exchange knowledge and experiences, and develop joint solutions to ensure the continued production of reliable data amid ongoing challenges and crises.
ESCWA Executive Secretary Rania Al-Mashat emphasized that official statistics are not a technical activity that can be postponed until crises are over. “They are an essential public service that must continue, even in the most fragile environments,” she said, while calling for stronger national statistical systems and greater investment in institutions, human resources and modern statistical infrastructure.
The meeting, held from 28 to 30 July, aimed to foster the exchange of knowledge and experiences and develop joint solutions to support the continuity of official statistics production, enhance the resilience of statistical systems across the Arab region, and contribute to evidence-based decision-making, recovery efforts and sustainable development.
