MP Calls for Fixes at King Hussein Bridge
Amman – Highlighting the economic bottlenecks at the King Hussein Bridge (Allenby/Karameh Crossing), MP Eng. Adnan Mashouqa directed a parliamentary question to Prime Minister Dr. Jafar Hassan, seeking immediate clarifications on chronic congestion and measures to enhance efficiency. The crossing remains a vital trade artery between Jordan and the West Bank, directly impacting thousands of Palestinians daily and imposing growing economic costs on trade and mobility.
MP Adnan Mashouqa, an engineer representing the 12th district (Maan), is known for advocating administrative integrity and economic development. He serves on key committees like Energy and Minerals, actively pushing for regulatory reforms and oversight of public services. His parliamentary query is based on Article 96 of the Constitution and Article 123 of the House Rules.
The question addresses seven critical economic and operational issues, beginning with the causes of severe congestion disrupting travelers, actual government actions for smoother flow, progress on automation, and the possibility of 24-hour operations to boost trade. Mashouqa also questioned the legal basis for VIP fast-track services, their revenue, and oversight mechanisms amid equity concerns.
Further inquiries focus on the justification for a single company's monopoly on transport services, including contract details, as well as policies on staff rotation, administrative oversight, tenure limits, and anti-conflict-of-interest measures affecting investments and trust. The MP additionally requested data on the number of complaints submitted to the Integrity and Anti-Corruption Commission over the past three years, along with investigation outcomes.
The parliamentary question also raises legal and security steps to protect travelers' dignity, the number of complaints related to abuses, and penalties imposed. Finally, Mashouqa sought clarification on the level of coordination with Palestinian authorities on traveler issues and the practical results achieved in resolving complaints and safeguarding rights for regional commerce.
