If you, like most woman, have ever thought, as you work in your kitchen, this gadget/appliance/working environment must have been designed by a man, as it isn’t really fit for purpose, then you would be right. Not only that, but the chances are that no woman was even consulted at any stage during the design or manufacturing processes of the item in question. Welcome to Data Bias.
In her book, Invisible Women, Caroline Criado Perez exposes just how little women are considered when designing…well just about everything! From ovens to car seat belts, from uniforms to medicine, from pianos to workplace temperature. It is a fascinating, if somewhat exasperating read.
